Pub night, Friday Nov. 14th

This month’s Allcanuck pub night will be held on Friday, Nov. 14 after 6:30 PM at:

Cafe Globen
Turesensgade 2
Copenhagen 1368

Directions:
From the Norreport S-train or Metro station, walk west along Frederiksborggade (towards the 5 lakes, past Israels Plads). At Norre Farimagsgade, turn left (south) and go 4 blocks to Turesensgade. Turn right. The cafe is a short distance along Turesensgade, on the right side.

If you get lost, call my "cell" number, 5015 1275.

They have a good selection of beer and other drinks. If you're hungry, you can bring in food or order it from the pizza place on the same street.

Our December event will be Friday, Dec. 12, probably at Gimmick bar on Istedgade, but I’ll post details here next month.

Canadian Companies

Hi All

I have just started a job search and part of the search includes looking for Canadian companies operating in Copenhagen.

I have been in touch with the Canadian Embassy and even though they know who operates here, it is not part of their service to make that information available.

Does anyone have another source for this information?

Thanks
Kevin

Remembrance Day 2008 marked in Copenhagen

Every year on Remembrance Sunday we and the other nations of the Commonwealth remember those who gave their lives in the service of their countries during the two World Wars. We cordially invite you to join us on this occasion.

The Remembrance Day ceremony will be held at Bispebjerg Kirkegård, Frederiksborgvej 125, 2400 Copenhagen NV, on Sunday 9 November, starting at 13.00 hrs. There will be a short Act of Remembrance and wreath-laying ceremony.

Everyone attending the ceremony is requested to enter by the main gate of Bispebjerg Kirkegård by 12.55 hrs. Upon entering through the main gate, drivers are requested to follow signs to "Søndre Kapel" where sufficient parking is available. Please stand to the south of the footpath, behind the wreath-bearers, or on either side of those laying wreaths.

In addition to the Ceremony at Bispebjerg Kirkegård, an inter-denominational Service of Remembrance is held at St Alban's Church, Churchillparken 11, 1263 Copenhagen K from 11.45 - 12.30 hrs. Unfortunately, due to the limited number of seats in St Alban's Church, it is not possible to offer a personal invitation to this Service and the church is usually very crowded.

Our spirit of commemoration remains strong and is captured in the words of Lawrence Binyon

when we remember and honour the sacrifice of those who have fallen so that others may live free:

“They shall grow not old as we who are left grow old

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn

At the going down of the sun and in the morning

We will remember them.”

Best Canadian Joke

An American couple is standing in an airport terminal somewhere in the States, waiting for their luggage. The wife happens to notice a very strangely dressed man also waiting. She asks her husband where he thinks the man is from.

The husband says he doesn't know. He decides to ask the man and approaches him. "Where are you from?" he asks the man.

"Saskatoon, Saskatchewan," he replies.

Puzzled, the husband returns to his wife. "Well, where is he from?" asks the wife. " I still don't know," replies the husband. "He doesn't speak English."

Working situation

After the marriage, and obtaining the initial acceptance into Denmark, how long until a foreigner can work? Do you have to wait until after the final Danish exam and permanent residency, or can work be obtained asap?

Many thanks!

Portal web site for immigrating to Denmark

A web site devoted to providing information for immigrants to Denmark has been revamped, with an easy to use layout and more information in English and a dozen other languages.

www.finfo.dk is a service of the State Library for Integration, and the site has links to plenty of information on finding work, education, arriving in Denmark, taxes, learning Danish, etc.

Date change for October pub night

Friday Oct. 10th is "culture night" in Copenhagen, and I encourage all members to take that in. So I have scheduled our October pub night thusly:

Sat. Oct. 11th starting around 7:30 PM
at Gimmick (formerly the Central Park Cafe)
Istedgade 24, 3 blocks west of Central Station on the north side of the street

If you get lost, call my "cell" number, 5015 1275.

The bar does not provide any food, only drinks, but if you want to bring along food to eat or order in Thai take-away (by special arrangement of the bar), that's OK. Smoking is permitted in the bar.

Also see the separate posting for a big brunch for expats, occurring Sun. Oct. 19th.
